The guide
What to know before you go
About Rivers
Rivers State sits at the heart of the Niger Delta, where an intricate network of rivers, creeks, wetlands and mangrove forests meets the Atlantic.
Its capital, Port Harcourt, is one of southern Nigeria's major commercial cities and a major centre for the country's oil and gas economy. The wider state extends into a very different landscape — river islands, fishing communities, coastal settlements, forests and historic trading towns.
Rivers is also culturally diverse, with communities including the Ikwerre, Kalabari, Ogoni, Okrika, Bonny, Opobo, Eleme, Etche and others, each with distinctive traditions and histories.
This creates a destination with two very different faces:
the city and the Delta.
