About Oyo
Oyo is one of the great cultural heartlands of southwestern Nigeria.
The state carries the legacy of the Old Oyo Empire, one of the most influential political powers in pre-colonial West Africa. Its historic cities, traditional institutions, festivals and cultural practices continue to shape the identity of the region.
At the centre of the state is Ibadan, one of Nigeria's largest cities and an important centre for education, research, business and culture. The city is home to the University of Ibadan, Nigeria's first university, as well as major agricultural and scientific research institutions. Oyo State Government
Beyond Ibadan, Oyo opens into the forests and archaeological landscapes of Old Oyo, the hills of Igbeti, the agricultural communities of Oke-Ogun and the historic towns of Oyo, Ogbomoso and Iseyin.
This is Yoruba country at scale.
