The guide
What to know before you go
From the fertile plains of the Benue River to the hills of Tivland and the cultural traditions of the Idoma and Igede people, Benue is a state defined by land, agriculture, culture and creativity.
Known as the “Food Basket of the Nation,” Benue has the agricultural scale to support that identity. NIPC currently describes it as Nigeria's leading producer of yams, with major production of soybeans, oranges and cassava, while highlighting the Benue River's 200km-plus natural irrigation corridor and opportunities in agro-processing and food manufacturing. Places to Discover
Makurdi
The city on the Benue.
Makurdi is the state capital and the natural starting point for a journey through Benue.
The city sits along the River Benue, making the waterfront one of its defining geographic features. It is also the state's principal commercial, administrative and hospitality centre.
For Visit Nigeria, Makurdi should be positioned as more than a transit point:
A city of food, river life, culture, markets and creativity.
River Benue
The river is central to the identity of the state.
It provides an important agricultural corridor, supports fishing communities and gives Makurdi one of its most recognisable landscapes.
The wider river corridor also has economic importance: NIPC identifies more than 200km of natural irrigation potential along the Benue River.
Potential experience:
Sunset on the Benue
A curated waterfront experience combining the river, local food, music and sunset views.
Ikyogen Hills
Located in Kwande, Ikyogen is one of Benue's most distinctive mountain landscapes.
The hills rise dramatically from the surrounding agricultural country and provide opportunities for hiking, photography and nature exploration.
The area is particularly suited to developing a mountain-and-farm experience, connecting the landscape with the agricultural communities around it.
Ushongo Hills
Ushongo is another of Benue's notable hill landscapes.
The area offers opportunities for outdoor exploration and photography and forms part of the state's wider natural tourism proposition. The Benue State tourism department identifies Ushongo Hills among its key natural attractions.
Ngokur Hills
Ngokur provides another example of the dramatic terrain found across parts of Benue.
Together with Ikyogen, Ushongo and other hills, these landscapes create the foundation for a potential Benue Highlands Trail.
Enemabia Warm Spring
One of the state's lesser-known natural attractions.
The warm spring provides an opportunity to build a more intimate nature and wellness experience around one of Benue's natural assets. The state tourism department lists Enemabia Warm Spring among its principal natural attractions.
Ikwe Wildlife Park
Located around Makurdi, Ikwe provides a wildlife and recreation component within the state's tourism network.
The state identifies Ikwe Holiday Resort and the associated wildlife environment among its tourism and leisure assets.
Otukpo
The heart of Idoma country.
Otukpo is an important commercial and cultural centre in southern Benue and the ancestral home of the Idoma people.
It is also associated with the Idoma International Carnival, an annual celebration featuring parades, masquerades, music, dance and cultural expression.
Oju & Obi
These communities are particularly important for Igede culture.
They host the Igede Agba Festival, an annual New Yam celebration involving thanksgiving, traditional dance, music and communal feasting.
Akata
Akata, in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area, is associated with one of Benue's distinctive cultural festivals.
The Akata Fishing Festival brings together Tiv, Etulo and Jukun communities through fishing competitions, traditional performances, masquerades and communal meals.
It provides an excellent foundation for a genuine fishing-and-culture experience.
Culture & Heritage
Benue is one of Nigeria's strongest destinations for living cultural heritage.
The state's cultural landscape includes Tiv, Idoma, Igede and other communities, each with distinctive languages, traditions, food, dress, music and ceremonial practices.
Kwagh-hir
Perhaps the state's most distinctive cultural expression.
Kwagh-hir is a form of Tiv theatrical performance using puppets, masquerades, music and storytelling to represent folklore, social life and community values. NICO describes it as an important expression of Tiv creativity and cultural heritage.
It is not simply a dance.
It is theatre, storytelling, satire and cultural memory.
This should become one of Visit Nigeria's signature cultural experiences in Benue.
