About
On the outskirts of Osogbo lies one of the most important surviving sacred landscapes of the Yoruba world. The Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove follows the Osun River through a dense forest filled with shrines, sculptures, sacred spaces and places of worship.
The grove is dedicated to Osun, the Yoruba deity associated with fertility, love, water and healing. It remains a living religious site rather than simply a historic monument.
History & Cultural Significance
Osogbo was founded around four centuries ago, and the grove became an important spiritual centre for the community. At a time when sacred groves existed around many Yoruba settlements, most disappeared or were greatly reduced. Osun-Osogbo is one of the most important surviving examples.
The grove also became internationally recognised through the work of Austrian-born artist Susanne Wenger, who became deeply integrated into the Yoruba community and worked with local traditions to restore and reinterpret many of the grove's artistic elements.
Today, the annual Osun-Osogbo Festival brings together worshippers, cultural practitioners, visitors and members of the Yoruba diaspora.
